Black Hills Queer Voices is a new LGBTQIA2S+ chorus bringing people together through music in the Black Hills.
Whether you’ve sung in choirs your whole life or only in your car, there’s a place for you here.
We’re currently building our community, meeting future singers and volunteers, and working toward our first informal sing this fall and our first performance in June 2027.
If you’d like to help shape what this becomes, we’d love to hear from you.

Right now we're looking for people who want to help create something from the ground up.

Black Hills Queer Voices exists to create a space where LGBTQIA2S+ people can build community through music. To protect that mission, singing membership is reserved for people who identify as LGBTQIA2S+.
We welcome allies who want to support BHQV through volunteering, partnerships, sponsorships, and attending performances.
The current vision is a community chorus without auditions.
No. Whether you've sung for decades or haven't opened a piece of sheet music in years, you're welcome.
No problem. While some members may read music, many won't. We'll provide the support, practice resources, and rehearsal time people need to learn together.
Absolutely. There will be opportunities to get involved as BHQV grows. If you're interested, join our interest list, and we'll keep you updated about future rehearsals, events, and opportunities to participate.
You're not alone. Many people who join BHQV will be walking into the room without knowing anyone else. We're intentionally building a community where new people are welcomed, introductions are encouraged, and everyone has a chance to find their place.
Nope. If you already know what singing range feels most comfortable for you, great. If not, we'll help you figure it out.
Voice parts are simply a way of organizing music. They're not a reflection of gender, identity, or experience. Many singers discover that the section they enjoy most isn't the one they expected, and that's completely normal.
We'll work with you to find the singing range that's healthiest, most comfortable, and most enjoyable for your voice.
We don't assign voice parts based on gender. Women can sing tenor. Men can sing alto. Nonbinary singers may feel most comfortable in any section. Some people's voices change over time, and some voices simply don't fit neatly into traditional choir categories.
We're currently building our founding community. We’ll share updates as rehearsal plans come together.
We'll gather input from our founding community to determine a rehearsal schedule that works for as many people as possible.
We'll begin in a small, informal rehearsal setting while we get the chorus off the ground. As BHQV grows, we'll move into a larger community rehearsal space. Registered singers will receive location details before rehearsals begin.
We're still building our first season, and we'd love community input along the way. Expect music that's joyful, moving, challenging, and fun ... from contemporary pop and folk to choral works, Broadway, queer artists, and everything in between.
Not at this time. During our founding season, BHQV is supported through donations and community support. If you're able to contribute financially, donations are always appreciated—but no one will be turned away because they're unable to give.
Our goal is to perform together, but we understand that performing can feel intimidating. We'll work together to create an experience that supports everyone's success.
Absolutely. Whether you have a specialized skill or simply want to lend a hand, we'd love to hear from you. Building a chorus takes more than singers – it takes a community. We're especially excited to connect with people who enjoy:
Accompanying or supporting rehearsals as a pianist or instrumentalist
Event planning and hospitality
Photography or videography
Social media and communications
Fundraising and sponsorships
Community outreach and partnerships
Welcoming new members and helping people feel at home
Helping with setup, teardown, and rehearsal logistics
Organizing music, supplies, or behind-the-scenes operations
Yes. We welcome allies who want to support BHQV behind the scenes through volunteering, community partnerships, sponsorships, event support, and by cheering us on at performances.
No. Black Hills Queer Voices is an independent community chorus. We welcome people from many different backgrounds who share our commitment to building an affirming space for LGBTQIA2S+ people through music.
